Tanya Tanaka, an artist and textile designer who resides in Tokyo, has had a busy year and has found her groove with these new digital drawings.

Tanaka has been photographing overhead wires and other geometric scenes around Tokyo, often using multiple exposures to create textures and atmospheres. She presented them at PechaKucha, vol. 128 in a slide show entitled, Dream Logic and Dream Fragments. The photographs were beautiful despite the glare of the projector. She has now taken those images and challenged herself in yet another medium. (For those who do not know her, she works in countless mediums.)

Tanaka took her photographic images and then made digital drawings, adding colour to what were black-and-white images of colour scenes. Although the geometric patterns are strong, the pastel colouring is gentle. (I apologise for not  taking more or better photos, but you can see more details at Tanya Tanaka‘s website.) She seems to have found her stride with these drawings. They are striking and memorable. They speak with her voice. Her signature style is unmistakable.

Tanaka is a member of the Art Byte Critique group and was interviewed by Lori Ono, and they had a discussion of Tanaka’s art books made for the Tokyo Art Book Fair.

Tanaka’s artwork will be at Le Petit Bedon in Daikanyama, Tokyo for a month or so and reflects a current trend to display art outside of the gallery setting in a cafe or restaurant. Le Petit Badon is one of several family-run French restaurants in Tokyo, including the one run by the father and which has earned a Michelin star. Highly recommended.
