Can you believe the energy in the featured image? The things that a girl has to do to earn tips. The whole night was a surreal as this. Do you see that cup in the foreground? The stage was actually that close. Odile, dressed up as a black cat in runner, warned to come early to grab a seat, because the venue, Kick Ass, was small. It was standing room only. For only 1000 yen, we more than got our money’s worth with four performances.

Dirty Deeds?

Most people were probably friends or acquaintances with the performers; the audience was almost as interesting as the performers to watch. Were some of them students in a burlesque class? Maybe. The room was filled with people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and nationalities. DJ Kamata Ramone (the name made sense after seeing him) in the corner played a fascinating mix of music. ACDC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” as well as retro Japanese music? I would love to get a copy of his play list. My Shazam app, of course, was not working after Apple updated their iOS.

My camera, however, was working, and I had some fun playing with it and its functions. I did not bring my favourite Fujii camera with its amazing talent of taking flattering pictures of everybody but I have to learn how to use this Sony. We were not allow to take pictures of the performances; people were standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Playing is fun!

Who performed that night? Odile was the first and I think the best. She came out in a tight, black leather outfit and gas mask; she was covered from head to toe. Do you remember the attitude of Jennifer Beals in “Flashdance”? This was burlesque, not a strip show. She was the only one who kept the same character with corresponding music from start to finish. Freiddie, a Freddie Mercury impersonator and lip syncher, was next. Mani Catchy played peek-a-boo, and Principessa Elegante closed the show as a classic fan dancer. Daisy was the MC, and Naspy was the stage kitten. What a job name!

Does this scene remind anybody else of the cabaret scene in “Desperately Seeking Susan” with Madonna? Just needed a cigarette girl and more room for the tables…
